What Is an HCl Scrubber?
An HCl scrubber is a wet gas-cleaning system that removes hydrogen chloride from process exhaust through counter-flow packed bed absorption. Contaminated gas enters at the base of the tower and rises upward through a bed of PP Pall rings while scrubbing liquid NaOH solution or water is distributed over the packing from above and flows downward in the opposite direction. HCl reacts with NaOH to form sodium chloride (NaCl) and water, converting the hazardous gas into a harmless, drain-safe effluent. This acid fume neutralization system design maximises gas-liquid contact area, driving removal efficiency consistently above 99% well within CPCB norms. The chloride gas abatement unit approach is preferred over dry alternatives wherever continuous high-volume HCl emission control is required.
Because hydrogen chloride is exceptionally soluble in water far more so than chlorine or sulphur dioxide an HCl fume scrubber can achieve effective removal using water alone at inlet concentrations below approximately 500 ppm. For higher loads or more stringent outlet targets, NaOH is dosed into the recirculation loop, maintaining alkaline conditions that drive the neutralisation reaction to completion. This dual-mode flexibility makes Enviguard’s hydrochloric acid scrubber equally suited to continuous venting from reactors, storage vent stacks, and batch-process exhaust.
Uncontrolled HCl emissions pose serious health, safety, and regulatory risks at your plant. Hydrogen chloride gas is classified as a toxic, corrosive material under the MSIHC Rules, 1989, with a 15-minute STEL of 5 ppm. Exposure damages the respiratory tract and causes acute irritation at concentrations as low as 1-5 ppm. From a compliance standpoint, CPCB General Emission Standards set a maximum outlet limit of ≤10 mg/Nm³ for HCl from chemical processes, and the Factories Act Schedule lists hydrochloric acid as a notifiable hazardous substance. Failure to meet these norms exposes your facility to enforcement action, consent-to-operate revocations, and production shutdowns.
HCl Scrubber Designed and Manufacture
Enviguard’s HCl scrubbers are designed and manufactured in-house at our facility, with full control over material selection, fabrication tolerances, and quality checks. The PP shell provides excellent chemical resistance to both HCl and NaOH; the FRP outer wrap delivers the structural rigidity needed for tall packing beds without adding metallic materials that would corrode. Internals PP Pall ring packing, PP spray nozzle headers, PP/FRP sump, and PP recirculation pump are selected as an integrated corrosion-resistant assembly.
Plants that install Enviguard’s HCl scrubber system consistently achieve outlet HCl concentrations below 10 mg/Nm³, protecting workers, meeting CPCB and Factories Act requirements, and avoiding unplanned shutdowns caused by acid vapour damage to downstream equipment. If your process generates HCl in any form reactor off-gas, pickling bath ventilation, chlorination exhaust, or storage vent contact Enviguard for a no-obligation application review.

How an HCl Scrubber Works
Counter-Flow Packed Bed Absorption
Enviguard’s HCl scrubber operates on the principle of counter-flow packed bed absorption. The tower body contains a deep bed of PP Pall rings a high-surface-area random packing that creates turbulent, intimate contact between the rising gas stream and the descending scrubbing liquid. NaOH (caustic soda) solution or water is pumped from the sump, distributed evenly across the packing cross-section by PP spray nozzles, and falls downward while HCl-laden gas flows upward from the inlet. The chemical reaction HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O drives absorption to completion across the packing height, functioning as a complete acid fume neutralization system. At lower concentrations, HCl’s inherently high water solubility makes this an effective chloride gas abatement unit even with water-only scrubbing. A mist eliminator at the tower exit removes liquid droplets before clean gas is discharged to atmosphere through the outlet stack.
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O
Irreversible neutralisation reaction drives absorption to completion
10-Step Process: Gas Entry to Clean Discharge
1
HCl-laden process exhaust enters the scrubber at the base inlet flange via the ventilation duct or stack connection.
2
A gas distribution plate or inlet baffle ensures uniform flow across the full cross-section of the packed bed.
3
Gas rises upward through the PP Pall ring packing bed at design velocity, typically 1.0-1.5 m/s superficial.
4
NaOH solution or water is drawn from the sump by the PP recirculation pump and delivered to the nozzle header.
5
PP spray nozzles distribute liquid uniformly over the packing top surface at the design L:G ratio of 1.5-3.0 L/Nm³.
6
Liquid flows downward counter-currently through the packing, maximising gas-liquid contact time and transfer area.
7
HCl absorbs into the liquid phase; NaOH neutralises it instantly – HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O – across the bed.
8
NaCl-bearing spent liquor collects in the PP/FRP sump for recirculation or periodic controlled drain-off.
9
Cleaned gas passes through the PP chevron mist eliminator, removing entrained droplets to below 50 mg/Nm³.
10
Clean gas exits at the top outlet, with HCl concentration ≤10 mg/Nm³ fully compliant with CPCB emission norms.

HCl Scrubber Technical & Commercial FAQs
15 questions answered by Enviguard’s application engineers. For questions not covered here, contact our team directly.
An HCl scrubber is a wet gas-cleaning system that removes hydrogen chloride from process exhaust using counter-flow packed bed absorption. Contaminated gas rises through a packed tower while NaOH or water flows downward, reacting with HCl to form harmless NaCl and water. The packed bed maximises gas-liquid contact, driving removal efficiency above 99% in correctly sized systems. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
Enviguard's packed tower HCl scrubber achieves ≥99% removal efficiency under design conditions, consistently meeting CPCB outlet norms of ≤10 mg/Nm³. This performance is verified during commissioning with calibrated stack monitoring equipment, and the test results are documented in the commissioning report. If your process requires higher stringency (≤5 mg/Nm³), Enviguard can design a two-stage scrubber arrangement. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
Standard configurations handle up to 5,000 ppm inlet HCl. Concentrations above this threshold are feasible with increased packing height, higher L:G ratio, and elevated NaOH dosing rate Enviguard engineers a site-specific solution based on your process data. For very high concentrations (above 1% v/v), a multi-stage arrangement or pre-absorption step may be recommended. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
Standard Enviguard HCl scrubbers are available in flow ranges from 500 Nm³/hr to 50,000 Nm³/hr as single-train units. For larger flows, Enviguard designs multi-train (parallel) configurations with a common inlet plenum. Very large duties (above 100,000 Nm³/hr) require a dedicated engineering study. All flow ratings are stated at normal conditions (0°C, 1 atm); actual volumetric flow at operating temperature is used for tower sizing. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
Standard skid-mounted HCl scrubbers are designed, manufactured, and delivered within 6–10 weeks of order. Enviguard's commercial process follows these stages: initial technical discussion → site data collection → technical and commercial proposal → order placement → in-house manufacturing → factory acceptance test (FAT) → despatch → site installation and commissioning. All stages are managed by the same in-house team, with no handoffs or subcontractors involved. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
Enviguard provides a 12-month equipment warranty from commissioning date, covering manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. Beyond warranty, Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC) are available, covering routine inspection, packing condition assessment, nozzle cleaning, pump seal service, pH/dosing system calibration, and performance verification. Monthly tasks: pump mechanical seal inspection, nozzle spray pattern visual check, pH sensor calibration, NaOH dosing pump performance check. Quarterly: mist eliminator cleaning, nozzle header inspection and flush. Annually: full packing inspection (visual and pressure-drop measurement), sump cleaning, structural integrity check of PP shell and FRP wrap, and fan/blower service. Enviguard's AMC programme covers all scheduled tasks, with site visits by the same team that commissioned your system. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
Enviguard supplies a comprehensive compliance documentation pack with every HCl scrubber: equipment data sheet with design parameters, material certificates for PP and FRP components, commissioning performance test report with stack monitoring data, P&ID, operations and maintenance (O&M) manual, and a CPCB compliance summary formatted for regulatory submission. All documentation is delivered in both print and digital format at handover. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
Yes. Because HCl is highly water-soluble, water-only scrubbing is effective at inlet concentrations below approximately 500 ppm. The high solubility drives absorption even without a chemical reaction. NaOH dosing is recommended for higher inlet loads, variable concentration streams, or where outlet targets are particularly stringent (below 5 mg/Nm³). Enviguard designs the scrubbing mode water-only or NaOH-dosed based on your specific duty. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
The scrubber shell is polypropylene (PP) with an FRP outer wrap for structural strength. All wetted internals are PP Pall ring packing, spray nozzles, and recirculation pump. The sump is PP or FRP depending on size and duty. No metallic components contact HCl or NaOH solution, eliminating the primary failure mode seen in carbon steel or even stainless-steel scrubbers. This full-PP/FRP construction is the industry standard for reliable long-term HCl service. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
Sizing requires the following process data: volumetric gas flow rate (Nm³/hr), inlet HCl concentration (ppm or mg/Nm³), gas temperature and moisture content, presence of other acid gases or particulates, and target outlet HCl concentration. Enviguard uses this data to perform mass transfer calculations that determine packing height, tower diameter, L:G ratio, and NaOH dosing rate. Download Enviguard's Sizing Questionnaire or contact our application team for a free sizing review. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
The liquid-to-gas (L:G) ratio for Enviguard's HCl scrubber system typically ranges from 1.5 to 3.0 L/Nm³ for water-based scrubbing. When recirculating NaOH solution, the effective L:G can be lower because the chemical reaction enhances the driving force for absorption. The design L:G is calculated from the mass transfer requirement, packing factor, and allowable pressure drop for your specific duty. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
Yes. Enviguard's in-house installation team handles all aspects of site work: civil foundation preparation guidance, mechanical equipment setting, ductwork and pipework connection, electrical and instrument hookup, and commissioning. Because the same engineers who designed and fabricated your HCl scrubber perform the installation, there are no interpretation errors or coordination gaps between design intent and site execution. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
PP Pall ring packing in HCl service typically lasts 5-8 years under normal operating conditions without chemical fouling. Enviguard's AMC programme includes annual packing condition inspection; replacement is recommended when measured pressure drop across the packing increases by more than 20% from the baseline commissioning value, or when visual inspection reveals significant channelling or fouling. Packing replacement can typically be completed in a single working day. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
Yes. Enviguard's HCl scrubbers are designed and guaranteed to meet CPCB General Emission Standards for HCl (≤10 mg/Nm³), Factories Act Schedule requirements for hazardous substance handling, and MSIHC Rules engineering control obligations. At commissioning, Enviguard conducts a live stack performance test using calibrated monitoring equipment and documents the results in a commissioning report suitable for submission to the State Pollution Control Board. Contact Enviguard for a detailed technical assessment.
